Mesothelioma is a rare cancer form, which mainly affects the lungs. Other common places where this disease might occur are the abdominal cavity, the heart area, the genital area.
The type of mesothelioma attacking the lungs is called pleural mesohelioma, the one developing in the abdominal cavity is called peritoneal mesothelioma, and the mesothelioma type that develops in the heart area is called pericardial mesothelioma. As their name shows, mesothelioma attacks the thin coverings, the membranes covering these organs, namely the pleura (thin covering that protects the lungs), the pericardium (fibroserous sac that encloses the heart) and the peritoneum (the membrane that lines the abdominal cavity and covers the other abdominal organs).
There were diagnosed several other mesothelioma types as well, besides the three main types mentioned above:
Testicular Mesothelioma
Liver Mesothelioma
Biphasic Mesothelioma
Cystic Mesothelioma
Multicystic Mesothelioma
Brain Mesothelioma
Papillary Mesothelioma
Sarcomatoid Mesothelioma
Adenocarcinoma Mesothelioma
Desmoplastic Mesothelioma
Epithelial Mesothelioma
